As our district moves forward in the month of March as we work to deliver sound instruction and new literacy strategies in many schools. Our students prepare for final academic benchmarks and the approach of spring. These two concepts are reflective of this time of year. We have heard many perspectives on the timing of our Spring Break and we will work to align with other districts in the future. We are waiting to hear if we can set our own calendar next year, based on legislative changes in the state. This year the calendar evolved around the state testing calendar and we are so intentional in creating the best testing conditions for our students.
Our middle and elementary teachers are learning the importance of echo, choral and reading aloud to help students master skills to read with fluency. We are striving to include more writing in all classes using some of our best thinking. This effort will continue to help us focus on what works best for our students.
Having visited numerous schools and classes, I am impressed with attitude of our students and their desire to learn. We are committed to deliver the curriculum so that our test results reflect our students true ability. As we teach the content better, our students will excel. Our best indicators that this happens in Hertford County Schools are evident in Fall test scores at our high schools. With nine different classrooms obtaining 100% pass rates, we know this can happen everywhere in our schools. That is our plan, to march toward the rating of schools of distinction.
